Rioja seems to be split between those producers making modern styled wines for the international market and traditionalists. This wine would fall into the second category with all the characteristics that has made the region famous. Made from a traditional blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano on the low yielding Alavesa hills, it is a classic wine. 2005 was an โexcellentโ vintage in Rioja producing ripe low yielding fruit with tannic structure for ageability. This wine was matured for 24 months in French (60%) and American (40%) oak with further 3 years in bottle. The bouquet is quite rustic with notes of hazelnuts, dried herbs, licorice and earth. It is very full bodied with firm tannins and powerful fruit weight. Drink now to 15 years. 94 points.
