The best examples of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay can rank with the best examples from any region in Australia. The cool central hills and careful slope selection is key to producing a sophisticated example of the variety. This wine shows a vibrant array of aromas ranging from roasted cashew nuts, ripe nectarines, toasty oak and a lively citrus lift. The palate is full bodied with layers of complexity and finesse. A classic example of Chardonnay from Robin Moody (ex Penfolds winemaker) who shows what 40 years of experience can do. Drink now to 2020.
About the Winery:
Somerled
This small boutique winery is owned by the Moody family and takes its’ name from a successful family racehorse from the early 1900’s. Rob Moody (Winemaker) is one of the most well known names in the South Australian wine industry. His career started in 1969 when Max Schubert at Penfolds employed him, when it was still a family company. He remained with the wine group for over 30 years before starting a successful consulting company. Rob also has an interest in a winery/vineyard in Kangaroo Island…amongst other things. Rob’s experience shows when it comes to the small range of wine styles produced. They focus primarily on Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc (fume), Sparkling (Pinot Noir) and Chardonnay. The wines are elegant, yet complex with tremendous flavour and length. The beautiful Somerled cellar door in the main street of Hahndorf is usually staffed by one of the family (Heather, Lucy or Emma) and makes the perfect venue for tasting these special wines.
