This vineyard has been owned by the same Carlsberg family since 1580, and is a blend of 49% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petite Verdot. The vines average 30 years old and the wine spends 14 months in barriques (30% new). This is a velvety yet muscular style of red Bordeaux. The bouquet shows notes of dried herbs (rosemary and thyme), cedar/cigar box/tobacco, with Cabernet showing most prominently. The palate is full bodied with pencil shavings, black cherries and some oak dryness. The warm 2009 vintage has worked it’s magic on many wines from the tricky St Estephe area. Drink 2015 to 2030.
